A flying house and a humongous sun — two of the special shapes for balloons the length and breadth of a six-storey building — will soar at the 15th Philippine International Hot Air Balloon Fiesta in Clark, Pampanga from Feb. 11-14. Around 80,000 spectators — up from last year’s 60,000 — are expected, with at least 23 hot air balloons, and participants from the Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the United Kingdom.
Touted as the biggest aviation event in Asia, the Balloon Fiesta attracts aviation enthusiasts drawn to the aerosports events, and families looking for weekend entertainment. One activity involving the air balloons is a “hare and hound” exercise, wherein a lead balloon takes off and all other air balloons try to get as close to it as they can, throwing down markers at their landing spot. The bigger the balloon, the more unwieldy it is, and usually smaller balloons are used for such activities.
