April’s First Friday in Downtown Lakeland will be much more than dining, strolling and shopping.
On April 2, First Friday will take on an aviation theme, with a fly-by evening formation by Ye Mystic Krewe, hot-air balloon rides, music by the U.S. Air Force rock band Reserve Generation, a hot-air balloon glow and night air show over Lake Mirror.
The events are a tie-in to Sun 'n' Fun, which is April 13 to 18. Admission to First Friday is free.
Events begin at 6 p.m., with balloon glow at 8:15 p.m. and air show at 8:45 p.m.

The Lima Lima Flight Team, the world's only six-aircraft civilian formation aerobatic team, took up some airspace last year during the Kansas City Airshow at the Downtown Airport.
The Kansas City Airshow is canceled this year because scheduling conflicts will prevent the star aerial acrobatic teams from performing, organizers said today.
In addition, an uncertain construction schedule for runway improvements at Wheeler Downtown Airport made planning for other, large aircraft difficult, Airshow Director Ed Noyallis said today.
The August event draws tens of thousands of spectators. But without the Navy’s Blue Angels or the Air Force’s Thunderbirds, officials feared attendance would suffer.
The aviation expo and airshow is produced by the Mid-America Youth Aviation Association.
The organization is still planning Youth Aviation Adventure Day on Aug. 7. The free event gives children hands-on aviation instructions and experiences.
Death Defying Air Show

Posted by: | CommentsIt's the first general aviation show of the year, so lots of eyes are on the sixth annual Sport Aviation Expo in Sebring, Fla., this week, hoping to get a sense of how 2010 will go. The last two months of 2009 were unexpectedly slow, Dan Johnson, president of the Light Aircraft Manufacturers Association, told AVweb on Wednesday, ending the year with LSA registrations overall down about 42 percent from the year before. Weather reports for the weekend look good, and some big news is expected, with an airplane under wraps outside the Piper booth — this is the first year Piper has appeared at the show, and they are expected to announce on Thursday that they are adding an LSA to their flight line. As of Wednesday, the show grounds were filling up, exhibit space was pretty much sold out, and Johnson said he was hopeful for a strong turnout. “We're hoping to kick off the year with a good start,” he said. The show runs Thursday through Sunday.
