ByMUNCIE — It’s time for another restaurant to take off at the Delaware County Airport.
Kacy J’s, an upscale dining establishment with a classical American menu featuring steaks priced up to $25, is set to open Tuesday and owner Jay Mealy — a pilot who is opening Kacy J’s along with his son and fellow pilot Chris — says he believes interest from the community will make the new eatery the first to succeed at the airport in more than three years.
“The community has missed this destination out here,” said the elder Mealy, who retired from the Muncie office of the Academy of Model Aeronautics. “We’ve had unbelievable support from the community.”
Kacy J’s follows Nick’s and Kimbler’s Landing, two short-lived restaurants that followed Vince’s, a longtime airport eatery that struggled before closing at the end of 2006.
Muncie Aviation, which owns the liquor license traditionally used by operators of restaurants at the airport, has a long-standing interest in maintaining an eatery there to cater to pilots and customers of the aviation company.
But Mealy said be believes Muncie and Delaware County residents will embrace a business removed from “restaurant row” along McGalliard Road.
“I personally feel the community will support this because it is a destination off McGalliard,” Mealy said. “It’s two minutes off McGalliard, yet it gets you out of Muncie. You have an opportunity to see planes taking off and landing, and at night when their taxi lights are on, it’s beautiful.”
Mealy said the restaurant’s dinner menu will feature angus beef steaks, salads, soups, baked rigatoni and appetizers, while the lunch menu will feature smaller portions priced up to $10.
The younger Mealy has 15 years of experience as an executive for Applebee’s and Cracker Barrel in Kentucky and West Virginia, his father said.
